Mount Pleasant (SC) town officials are considering purchasing 38 acres located on Sewee Road in Awendaw, SC to build a police and fire training center. Approx. 20 acres would be built on and the rest of the land would be used as a buffer. According to Count ON 2 News report Meryl Conant, January 3, 2007, the facility would be used for local rescue teams. Currently the nearest training facility is in Columbia.

However this proposed plan has been met with opposition. More than 100 Residents in Awendaw have signed a petition opposing the facility because they believe it will destroy the area’s rural heritage as the facility would more than likely need to be secured with lighting of all sorts and fencing. Currently the land isn’t zoned appropriately for the construction of such a facility but the Town of Mount Pleasant plan on petitioning the Charleston County Zoning Committee on Monday to get the property rezoned so they can move forward with the project. Several residents of Awendaw plan on attending the meeting to fight it.
