“Charlestonians don’t just live in the place; they’ve got it in their blood.”
— Condé Nast Traveler

Fall is Charleston’s best-kept secret. With pleasant weather and light crowds, what could be better than to take advantage of the many opportunities the Preservation Society has arranged? Whether it is one of our self-paced walking tours of private houses and gardens, a “Living in History” lunch lecture, a plantation tour, or an “Up-close and Personal” tour, there is something for everyone.

HOUSE AND GARDEN TOURS $50 per person
Join us as our homeowners open the doors and garden gates
to their private properties. Each Thursday through Sunday
in October we offer self-guided tours with no two being the
same. Unless stated otherwise, guests will visit a minimum of
four or five private interiors and several personal gardens.
Docents will share information about the houses, their periods,
and what makes each property unique. Guests will leave not
only with a sense of history, but also with the stories that make
each property and the city like no other in America. Tours
cover several blocks so expect a good bit of walking.

LIVING IN HISTORY see website for details
Enjoy lunch at 82 Queen while presenters entertain guests
with various narratives about Charleston’s storied past, as well
as the city’s present-day challenges.

A DAY ON COOPER $125 per person
Join members and guests as we venture north of the city
via coach to the scenic landscapes of the Lowcountry, a
setting rich in history and important to making Charleston a
prosperous city. This tour offers a glimpse into the people and
history of the Cooper River plantations and today’s stewards
who lovingly preserve them.

FOUR FOR $40 $40 per person
New this year is an abbreviated tour called “Four for $40.” On
Thursday, October 13, we will offer four noteworthy properties
that will cater to those guests wanting to kick off their
weekend by experiencing a taste of Charleston’s history and
architecture. Interiors will be included at each property.

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL see website for details
Professionals in their field or licensed guides will lead “Up
Close and Personal” tours, a series of new offerings designed
with a theme or educational component. Guests will gain
access behind the scenes to exclusive spaces.

WALKING HISTORY TOURS $25 per person
Once again, we are pleased to offer guided walking tours
each Thursday through Sunday. Back by popular demand are
“Invention of Wings,” based on Sue Monk Kidd’s popular book
by the same title, and “Ironwork of Charleston,” a tour focusing
on the city’s beautiful ironwork.
All tours are limited and we strongly urge advance reservations.
